Field Survey Report
2019-2020
(Status of Women in Mewat: A Case Study of Raniyaki Village in Tauru
Block of Nuh District)
On 20 November,
2019, a field survey was conducted in the Raniyaki village In Tauru block of
Nuh district. The student of MA Final in Geography department of HLG GOVT. College
participated in the field survey under the supervision of Sh. Rakesh Kumar
& Sh. Pratap Singh. The main purpose of the field survey was to know the
socio-economic status of the women in the Mewat region. The 100 respondents
were selected through systematic purposive sampling technique. Among the 100
respondent 50 were Muslim and 50 were Hindu. There were 60 Women respondent
while 40 were Male. The finding of the field survey had been quite surprising.
Mewat is the most
socio-economically backward region in the highly developed state Haryana. The
field survey findings show that most of the respondents belong to the large
family size. The same corroborated in their opinion about the family size.
Around 40 per cent respondents advocated 4 to 6 children for a couple. 30
percent respondent advocated for more than 10 children for a couple. This shows
the traditional mindset of the people in Mewat. The govt. is doing its best for
providing the basic infrastructure at the village level like water,
electricity, etc at village level. The report shows that most of the women work
in the field and look after the cattle. With the changing of time the women are
participating in the family decision 68 percent of the respondents admit that
the women are playing an active role in family decision making. The women have
the independence of casting the vote of their choice. However the people of
Raniyaki village are still bound with traditional orthodox. Most of their girls
are married under the age of years. The people of Muslim community never
allowed their daughter to visit town alone. The strongly abide by the Shariyat
law and recommend Pardha (Veil) for the women. This is the main reason for
educational backwardness among the women in Mewat.
The report shows that most of the
female face domestic violence. They play little role in family planning, and
are treated as a child bearing machine. They are facing this ordeal on the name
of religion. The women face sexual violence within the married life. The report
also reveals that consumption of alcohol is also disturbing the life. However
the alcohol consumption was limited to Hindu community mostly. Most of the
villager is unemployed, and this problem gives birth to illegal ways of income.
The village Raniyaki is infamous for criminal activities like stealing ,
snatching, illegal mining etc. Though the govt. is doing its best effort to
providing the basic infrastructure but it seems that the villager is not ready
to get rid of their orthodox mind setup. Most of the villager is busy in
illegal ways of income. Women in Raniyaki village don’t have the freedom of
casting votes, choosing their life partner. Instead, they are treated as child bearing
machine, facing the sexual violence on the name of religion. The report
presents grim pictures that in the 21th century the women in Mewat even don’t
have the right on her body. They are still confined to the four walls waiting
for the freedom to witness the outer world.
